Mirrorhead - The Novel

On a post crash, swing infused 1930s Caribbean island, five individuals are conspiring to to turn over a multimillion Dollar racket armed only with rum, guile and a hardy perennial.

Garcia takes us on a rambling journey through the sticky shanty towns, the bliss inducing sting of the Yacca herb and the dusty swing of Duende after dark.

In a time reflecting our own, Mirrorhead offers us depression, solution and revolution in the same easy measure as the music that informed it.

An original and well written book that draws the reader in until it's difficult to put down. It provides an excellent parallel with current events mirrored in the tale of a fictional Latin American island in the 1930's. The author has created well drawn characters and a fast paced narrative which all in all combines to produce an enjoyable and thought provoking read. There are various elements in there reminding me a little of Grahame Greene, Hunter S and Jim Dodge, certainly when it comes to conjuring up the steamy and anarchic, tropical atmosphere of a boozy corrupt Caribbean island and it's corrupt regime. I'm looking forward to the authors next book with interest. So there!

A wonderfully hot, sweaty (and musically literate and inspiring) cautionary tale of corruption, vested interest and the struggle of those suffering for the profits of the powerful.

Aside from trips to the record deck - inspired by the story (read it and it'll make sense) it was extremely tough to put down and finishing it certainly left me hungry for more.

A beautifully written and engaging piece, so...more please...

This book was a very enjoyable read, with a great story, interesting characters and involving writing style. We are transported to a fictional island in the '30s where a revolution is boiling up. With clear parallels to today and the banking crisis of 2008, the political ideas come across in an entertaining way with a strong plot-lines and very funny dialogue. Thoroughly recommended.

This book has all the elements of a great film - you can already imagine the gritty town to the backdrop of a tropical paradise and the characters with fire in their belly and yet are human in their sillyness and doubts as well as being heroic and courageous, when the situation calls for it.
It is brimming with positivity, but doesn't shy away from showing the dark side of human nature, nevertheless offering hope that when things seem utterly crap, there's something to hold on to and fight back.
Whether you read it as an adventure story or a book to provoke thoughts and inspire, either way you are in for a ride (especially when reading in the tube, where I regularly missed stops after opening this book).
